HowTo: GIMPshop on Ubuntu

February 22nd, 2007

I guess that if you are here you already know what GIMPshop is. If you don’t, here’s a quickie:

GIMPshop is a modification of the free/open source graphics program GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP), intended to replicate the feel of Adobe Photoshop. Its primary purpose is to make users of Photoshop feel comfortable using GIMP.” — Wikipedia

Now, what do we need to install GIMPshop? The Gimp!

Let’s get started.

Step 1: Install The Gimp (you can skip ahead if you have it already)

On a terminal, type:

sudo apt-get install gimp gimp-data gimp-svg gimp-print

Step 2: Download GIMPshop

On a terminal, type:

wget http://www.plasticbugs.com/blogimg/gimpshop_2.2.11-1_i386.deb

(note: you can also copy the link and paste it on your browser)

Step 3: Install GIMPshop

Again, on a terminal, type:

sudo dpkg -i gimpshop_2.2.11-1_i386.deb

Voila! You have installed GIMPshop!

Now just fire up The Gimp:

gimp

I’d love to digg this, as i’ve been struggling with it. BUT, i get this error, killing my gimp..
gimp: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/libgtk-x11-2.0.so.0: undefined symbol: g_hash_table_ref

Have you tried reinstalling both The Gimp and the GimpShop package?

You could also be having problems with the mentioned libgtk library. You can go to Synaptic, find the library, and reinstall it.

Syanptic/apt should have installed everything you need. Just try reinstalling in case something went south in your installation.

Sorry, i totally don’t wnat to turn your comments into support, but even that didn’t work for me.
Synaptic shows it as installed, but everytime i run gimp from cli, i get that error. If i run it from the gui, it just never loads.

I have all the same problems as this guy. His solution was to get rid of gimpshop (which immediately fixes the problem of not being able to start the gimp). I’ve ran/re-ran most of the suggestions by the guy trying to help him.

It doesn’t show keystrokes for the sudo input…just type in your password and press enter, it should work fine.
